The location – Belihuloya

The Belihuloya is a popular site in Sri Lanka. It is widely visited by tourists from various countries in the world. Even local travelers love to visit the site of Belihuloya. The Belihuloya is a perfect location to spend some days peacefully far away from the madding crowd and hustle and bustle of city life.

River Belihul Oya – 500 m from Landa Holiday Home

The River Belihul Oya, just 20km in length, originates on Horton Plains National Park (1524m) high above, then flows, gushes, tumbles & drops through an assortment of eco systems all the way to into modern man-made Samanalawewa Reservoir. The river, watched over by series of mountain peaks including Gon Molliya (“The Hump of an Ox”) & Paravi (“Pigeon”), crates some very beautiful waterfalls in its downhill path. Paddy fields surrounding the settlement are fed by streams from the river.

Belihuloya is one of the best bathing spots in Sri Lanka for safe river bathing.Number of travelers both local and foreign come for bathing especially during weekends.

University of Sabaragamuwa – 1 km from Landa Holiday Home

Belihuloya is home to the Sabaragamuwa University. This is a very picturesque and romantic place.

Bambarakanda Falls – 30 minuts drive from Landa Holiday Homes

Bambarakanda Falls – 30 minutes drive from Landa Holiday Homes The Bambarakanda Falls is the highest waterfall of Sri Lanka measuring 790 feet. It is situated 4900 feet above the sea level. The waterfall starts from the Mahaeliya in Horton Plains The sight of the fall is still worth watching. The lush mountains surrounding the fall give it a wonderful look.

It has a rich biodiversity.To the tourists, nature walk in Horton Plains Nature Reserve is very popular. In the Horton Plains, you will come across Elk, Deer, Giant Squirrel, Wild Boar, Wild Hare,Porcupine, and a variety of Migratory birds, which are unique to this region. There are 16 Leopards in Horton Plains. If you are very lucky you may get a glimpse of a Leopard during your travel in the Horton Plains. The total distance of trekking in side the park is approximately of 6 kilometers

Samanalawewa Reservoir, Dam and Hydroelectric Project – 45 minutes

This 100 meters high dam has created a reservoir of nearly 350 sq. km. of water at the confluence of the Walawe Ganga and Belihuloya. This dam was completed in 1991 by the Japanese contractors. The still and calm waters of the Samanalawewa reservoir are perfect for canoeing. You can go for a leisurely paddle for a couple of hours in the Belihuloya River.
The power station of the hydroelectric project which has a capacity of 120 MW is located about 6 kilometers from the dam at Kapugala. Permission to visit should be obtained from the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Kinchigune

Kinchigune is a small village at the outskirt of the samanalawewa, on the other side of the dam. It’s a breath taking view of Samanlawewa and its calm deep waters.

Study projects on fauna and floraThe most populer trekking trails are Samanalawewa Trail, Horton plains Trail (via Bambaakanda Water Falls), Kinchigune Trail, Hawagala Trail & Belihul Oya – Ohiya trail via Satan’s steps & Devils’s Staircase.

Camping in Samanalawewa area, nature trekking in the village and bird watching are some of the popular activities by the adventure travelers.

You can do nature trials alongside a riverine forest and the Hirikatuoya River. During the exciting trails, you can venture through the paddy fields, across rivers and past local village houses with their extensive vegetable plots. This will give an ideal opportunity to learn a bit about the local agricultural systems and simple way of village living. Along the way, you will also witness several types of beautiful birds and butterflies and some charming waterfalls. The trail will come to an end where the Belihuloya River meets the Samanalawewa reservoir.
